Porsche
924s - 944 - 951 - 968
Griffiths designs and supplies various Porsche air conditioning components, such as ac, a/c, barrier hoses, clutches, compressors, condensers, driers, expansion valves, evaporators, fan motors, R134a refrigerant upgrades and updates, remanufactured Nippondenso, new Kuehl and Sanden compressors, vents and more for Porsche 924s, 944, 951 and 968 models.
Compressors
OEM - Nippondenso Compressors
The early 944 (1983-1985.5) used the large swash-plate multi-piston driven
Nippondenso having 6 mounting ears. The clutch pulley is a 5 groove serpentine
(multi-rib). The compressor unit is similar to the 928 from 1980-1989,
only the clutch pulley is different. Griffiths stocks this early compressor
with and without clutch in R12 and R134a configurations. Our re manufacturing
details include: case, piston & bore and reed valve inspections, bearing
replacement, quality seals and clutch overhaul. For a good alternative
to a re manufactured compressor see our Kuehl Kits below.
From 1985.5 through 1992 Porsche used a smaller swash-plate multi-piston driven
Nippondenso having 4 mounting ears. This same unit is used on the 924s.
The clutch pulley is a 6 groove serpentine (multi-rib). These compressors
work very well.... until the a/c system loses oil, at which point the compressor
locks up (freezes or seizes). It may initially seem that the clutch is
locked up or the pulley's bearing is worn. Upon careful inspection is quite
common to find the coil is burnt due to heat build up, the pulley bearing
is worn as the grease melted out, or the pistons and cylinders are scored.
Griffiths stocks this later model compressor with and without clutch in
R12 and R134a configurations. Our re manufacturing details include: case, piston
& bore and reed valve inspections, bearing replacement, quality seals
and clutch overhaul. If you are not committed to the OEM style Nippon a
better solution would be our Kuehl kit (below) as there is no "core" charge. This is a NEW compressor (below) !
The NEW Kuehl (pronounced "cool") Compressors
Griffiths offers an alternate solution compressor "kit" for your 924s, 944, 951 or 968. This
is our Kuehl (pronounced "cool") compressor kit. A picture of the Kuehl
attached to the 944 alternator/compressor bracket is featured on the right (also fits 924s and 968). The Kuehl is simple to install as our kit includes everything you'll need and it's R134a ready:
-
new Compressor & Clutch
-
mounting Hardware
-
new high pressure Hose Assembly
-
new Drier
-
new Belt
-
R134a charge port adapters

The Kuehl is swash plate design offering smooth performance with R134a
refrigerant. Since the Kuehl is a "new" compressor you don't have to worry
about core deposits. You would want to consider this product when either:
(a) you are dissatisfied with the performance of your original compressor,
or (b) your current compressor seized (there are no core deposits involved
with our Kuehl units).

Above on the left side is stock 944, 951, 968 "tube and fin" two row construction condenser as found on 1985/2 + 944, 951 and 968. With this stock tube and fin design, as air attempts to pass through a tube and fin type coil air masses converge and deflect air away from the tubing surface; note the large tear drop shaped "hot spots" (shown in red) on the trailing edge of the round tube cross section.
Above on the right side is Kuehl Super II high performance condenser, which is a direct drop in, bolt on, replacement for stock factory condenser found on 85/2 944, 951 and 968 models. This new condenser utilizes next generation "serpentine" tubing. The benefits of the Kuehl Serpentine lay in the unique serpentine tube design which is found in today's vehicles using R134a. Rather than using old fashion round tubing with many braze joints the Kuehl Serpentine has one continuous multi-channel extrusion to channel the flow of refrigerant. The fin spacing is also greater. This design offers three advantages over the old tube and fin design: (i) with the larger fin spacing a greater volume and velocity of air moves across the condenser coil. (ii) Serpentine (rectangular cross section tubing) develops small and fewer "hot spots" as opposed to tube and fin; serpentine coils are more efficient and offer better performance. (iii) The Kuehl Super II unit has only two braze joints rather than dozens as found on tube and fin designs.

Driers
The receiver drier is critical component to your a/c system. The drier
is as important as your oil filter is to your engine. It consists of a
steel tank, a filter, desiccant bag (drying agent) and a top mounted site
glass. Driers should be replaced whenever: (a) your system has lost it's
refrigerant and the drier is the original unit, (b) the system is suspect
to excessive moisture, (c) you are changing over to an alternate refrigerant
or incompatible refrigerant oils, or (d) your compressor seized or locked
up. The drier can be found typically attached to the inner front driver's
side wheel well. Griffiths stocks driers for your 924s and 944 models.
Expansion Valves
The 924s and 944 uses an internally equalized expansion valve. The Expansion
valve should be replaced when either, (i) diagnostics have confirmed valve
failure or leakage, or (ii) your compressor seized or locked up. Griffiths
stocks expansion valves for your 924 and 944.
Hose Line Assemblies
The a/c hose lines on the 924 and 944 were made of traditional hose
(rubber). This original type of hose was designed during the time period
when R12 refrigerant was inexpensive and it's affect on the ozone level
was not known. This old fashion hose line slowly leaks (permeates) refrigerant
through it's skin overtime. It was common to "top off" or recharge the
system on a yearly basis. Today, with the high cost of R12 it's not wise
to have leaks of any kind. With the introduction of R134a refrigerant the
a/c industry determined that the original type hose leaked R134a at a greater
rate than R12. To solve the problem a new type of hose was designed that
has inner liner which reduces rate of permeation (leakage) of refrigerants
through the hose wall. It's called "barrier" hose. You should inspect your
hose lines on a yearly basis, looking for cracks, signs of oil or dirt
accumulation on the hose or near the hose fittings. You may notice small
pin size holes that are evenly spaced in a line running the length of your
hoses. These are "pressure relief" holes which are installed by most hose
manufacturers. The small holes allow pressure to escape in the event that
the primary inner wall of the hose should fail under extreme pressure.
The designers contemplated that it would be better to avoid a sudden eruption
in the outer wall that could harm the vehicle or a technician working on
the car. Under normal peak operating pressures refrigerant does NOT leak
through these holes. The high pressure hose, between compressor and condenser,
is prone to fatigue and leakage. Griffiths stocks this hose line assembly
made of barrier hose. Replacement of the other hose assemblies can be expensive.
Griffiths offers a quick-turn-around rebuilding service for these other
hose lines that is very cost effective, using new barrier hose.
